hi my name is Chris Morales I’m a criminal defense attorney in San Francisco California I’m a certified specialist in criminal law today we’re going to talk about sealing your juvenile record so juvenile convictions are any convictions that happen before you turn 18 once you’re 18 you’re an adult and you’ll be in the adult criminal system but if you suffered a juvenile conviction before you were a teen you can get that seal for almost all purposes by going to the probation department in the county where
you suffered the juvenile conviction and filling out some forms and possibly paying a fee and the juvenile probation department will do a run a background check on you make sure you are eligible and if you are eligible to have your juvenile record sealed they will they will file a petition in front of the judge and and get that get that sealed some counties the public defender’s office will help you seal in your juvenile record and of course you can always hire a private attorney to do that just to make sure that it’s done
properly and done quickly especially if you’re in a rush you may want to have a have an experienced criminal defense attorney seal your record unfortunately some records are not sealable and these in California are called welfare and institutions code 707 B crimes and those are typically strike felonies the most serious type of crimes if you suffered a strike felony sometime after your 8 after the age of 14 you cannot seal your record it lives on forever and it is available even for non police and non
prosecutors it would have to make a motion to the judge to take a look at your record at at that serious 707 B record but they would be able to potentially get it if they can make a strong enough argument to a judge now if you have suffered a serious felony in juvenile court there’s no way to seal your record but there may be a way to dismiss it with a 7 8 to motion so usually what juvenile judges are looking for is a period of time maybe 10 years since you suffered that serious conviction where you’ve
done really good things gone to school got your high school diploma got your college diploma completely stayed out of trouble and if you make a really strong this one you’re gonna probably need a private attorney if you make a very strong argument the judge may dismiss your juvenile 707 be serious felony offense and once that is dismissed then you can truthfully say that you have you have no no record at all either juvenile or adult it’s a little bit tricky getting in the 782 motion granted so you
are going to need an experienced attorney to help you with that in juvenile court if you have any questions at all about sealing your juvenile record please give us a call at four one five five five two one two one five and we can set up a free consultation and I can tell you what you can and can’t do in juvenile court
