A cyclist accused of killing a 71-year old pedestrian in San Francisco pleaded not guilty of manslaughter charges. The accused, Chris Bucchere, was charged with vehicular manslaughter. The 38-year-old accused was out on custody after posting bail. Dressed in slacks and a blazer, Chris refused to comment to reporters who thronged outside the courtroom.
Chris Bucchere was riding down a common route for cyclists, starting from Marin County to San Francisco. It is believed that he was trying to beat his own time record when he hit Sutchi Hui, aged 71, killing him instantly. The incident took place on the 29th of March at 8 a.m.
Defense attorney’s statement
Chris Bucchere’s attorney made a statement on his client’s behalf before his arrival to the court. In the statement, it was mentioned that Chris Bucchere keenly waited for the day when he can express his heartfelt condolences to the family of Sutchi Hui for their painful loss. District attorney George Gascon’s statement
The charges filed against Chris Bucchere were initially limited to misdemeanor. However, it was later alleged that he had broken numerous laws right before the collision could take place. According to George Gascon, District Attorney, this behavior by Chris indicated complete negligence, aggravating the charges from misdemeanor. The court has ordered Bucchere to appear in court on the 27th of July for a preliminary hearing.
