Criminal & Civil Cases

A criminal law case is when an individual is being punished for an act that has been classified as a crime by a state legislature. Example of criminal law include: theft, assault, robbery, trafficking in controlled substances and murder. A criminal case is much more complicated and undergoes more steps than a criminal case. If a defendant is found guilty he/she must face incarceration and/or fines. Criminal cases can be divided into two categories Felonies and Misdemeanors. A felony is a more serious crime than a misdemeanor. A felony is a crime punishable by more than one year in prison or by death. A misdemeanor is usually punishable by a fine or incarceration in the county jail for less than a year.

A civil case on the other hand is when there is a dispute over the rights and duties of an individual. Examples of civil cases includes: Landlord/tenant disputes, divorce proceedings, child custody proceedings, property disputes, personal injury and much more. For a civil case, civil ligation engages some sort of compensation for injuries or for damages for the individual whom has been victimized. Civil cases can be brought in both state and federal courts.
