A White Collar crime is usually committed by professionals, business and public officials. Most white collar crimes involve some form of theft or fraud for the purpose of obtaining money under misleading circumstances. The penalties for white collar crimes vary. Some individuals may be faced with a monetary fine, a prison sentence or a combination of the two.
Types of White Collar Crime:
Bank Fraud: When one engages in an act of activity where the purpose is to defraud a bank of funds
Blackmail: a demand for money or other consideration under a threat to do bodily harm, injure property, accuse of a crime or to expose secrets
Bribery: When money, goods, services, information of value is offered with the purpose of influencing actions, opinions, decisions of the taker.
Cellular Phone Fraud: The unauthorized use of tampering, manipulating a cellular phone or service. This is done by either use of a stolen phone or when an actor signs up for service under false identification
Computer Fraud: When computer hackers steal information sources contained on computers such as bank information, credit cards or proprietary information
Counterfeiting: this is when a person copies or imitates an item without having been authorized to do so and passes the copy off as the original item.
Credit Card Fraud: the unauthorized use of a credit card to obtain goods of value
Embezzlement: When a person who has been entrusted with money/property appropriates it for his or her own use of benefit
Extortion: When one person illegally obtains property from another by actual or threatened force or violence
Forgery: When a person passes a false an item with the intent to defraud or injure the recipient
Larceny/Theft: When a person wrongfully takes another’s money or property with the intent to steal it
Tax Evasion: When a person commits fraud in filing or paying taxes
Welfare Fraud: When a person engages in an act to obtain benefits from the State or Federal government
