Why You Need an Experienced Criminal Defense Attorney to Help You Fight Them
More than just about any other criminal act, being charged with a sex crime is an accusation that can have devastating professional and personal consequences.
Even if you are not convicted of any wrongdoing, being charged with a sex crime such as rape or child molestation can have a serious impact on your life and reputation. If convicted, time in prison is just the beginning of a lifetime of nightmarish consequences unique to sex offenders.
If you or someone you know has been accused of a sex crime, it is essential to contact an experienced criminal law attorney. You need someone who will be thoroughly committed to fighting as hard as possible to help you clear your name.
The stakes are simply too high to entrust such a case to an inexperienced attorney, or one who only dabbles in criminal law. This is not the time to seek advice from a family member or a friend-of-a-friend who happens to be an attorney – not unless you want to gamble with your freedom and your reputation!
The Sex Offender Registration Act (aka Megan’s Law) – What You Need to Know
Under Megan’s Law, if you are convicted of certain sex crimes (especially those involving children),you must register as a sex offender with the local police for the rest of your life.
Once registered, local law enforcement will notify the public and nearby schools as to your whereabouts. Local law enforcement must be updated periodically, as well as whenever you change employment or move – for the rest of your life! (Failure to update this information will result in new criminal charges, most likely a felony.)
Although Megan’s Law specifically prohibits others from using the information in the sex offender registry to harass or commit crimes against those listed in the database, registered sex offenders face a lifetime of difficulty finding employment and housing, and are shunned in the communities in which they live. Furthermore, registered sex offenders are prohibited from living near schools, parks or other places that children gather, and are usually prohibited from being near any child, even a relative.
Information about registered sex offenders that was once only available by calling a special 900 number or by visiting local law enforcement is now readily available on the Internet. This information can be found on the official California Department of Justice’s sex offender registry website, as well as independent services that offer everything from maps showing nearby offenders to email alerts.
