Failing to abide by the conditions of your OR release can land you in jail.
A defendant who has been released on his own recognizance (“OR”) can also be told to follow certain requirements, such as attending counseling, remaining in school, living with parents or friends, refraining from associating with specific individuals, abataining from alcohol, and so on. These conditions are valid as long as they are specific and reasonable.
But just as with suspects who have been released on bail, OR suspects face consequences if they do not adhere to the conditions placed upon them. Failing to report to a probation officer as required can result in a warrant for that person’s arrest, for example. At that point, the suspect will be brought back to court, where his OR release will probably be withdrawn. At that point, the suspect will need to post bail or return to the jail to await trial.
