An alleged drunk parolee caused the shutdown of the Bay Bridge on the 5th of July after crashing his car and firing his gun in an attempt to flee from the police on the California highway. The closing of the bridge caused havoc for daily commuters who were stranded for more than 3 hours. The incident took place at around 1:34 am when the suspect, Antonio Roberson, a 29 year old felon from Oakland was moving east on the California highway. The suspect, who has been convicted of human trafficking, crashed his Cadillac Eldorado 1984 right into the guardrail close to the S curve, California Highway Patrol reported.
CHP Officer’s statement
Mark Ferguson, CHP Officer, said that after the vehicle crashed, police officers approached it to help the female passenger and the driver. This was when gunfire began, he said. At this point, Roberson tried to take away in his damaged vehicle while it came to a stand still a few hundred yards away, Ferguson said. Both driver Roberson and passenger Olivia Breheny, who is 26 years old and is believed to be an Australian national, were brought to a local hospital, he said. Here, they were treated for minor injuries, which they incurred from the crash, he added.
Ferguson also mentioned that the CHP did not locate the firearm as soon as the suspects were taken to the hospital. The CHP has decided to book Roberson for DUI charges and weapons felony after his stay in the hospital. Ferguson also mentioned that presently Roberson is facing parole, owing to a conviction relating to human trafficking of a minor. Breheny was released after being questioned.
